City of Norris: A Quaint Retreat
Start your adventure in the City of Norris, a charming town steeped in history and community spirit. The city’s picturesque streets are lined with houses built by the Tennessee Valley Authority to house the workers constructing Norris Dam. The houses, built out of natural stone and cedar, each had a porch and were equipped with all of the modern conveniences of the time such as electricity, ceiling heat and refrigerators. The city was fully operational with a post office, pharmacy, grocery store and a school that housed all grades in addition to an area that could be accessed for adult educational programs. It was a showcase town for New Deal era programs.
Clinch River: Angler’s Paradise
As you continue along Norris Freeway, be sure to stop at the Clinch River, a haven for fishing enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The river boasts crystal-clear waters and picturesque surroundings, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful picnic or a relaxing afternoon by the water. If you are ready for a stroll, check out the Songbird Trail.
Rice Grist Mill: A Glimpse into the Past
Originally constructed along Lost Creek in Union County, this mill was built by James Rice in 1798. The millhouse is a two-story log structure with a wood shake roof that has a wooden water wheel with a overshot design; meaning water was channeled to the top of the wheel and allowed to pour over it to turn the wheel. All the internal gears were carved from hickory and the main water wheel shaft is believed to have been hewn from a yellow poplar tree. The millstones are original, imported from France, and were used as ballast stones on their voyage from abroad. Park at the adjacent Lenoir Museum to explore the grounds, learn about the milling process, and enjoy the rustic charm of this well-preserved piece of history.
Lenoir Museum: Timeless Exhibits
The Lenoir Museum contains artifacts from Early Americana which were collected for over 60 years by Will G. Lenoir and his wife Helen and donated to the State of Tennessee. The Lenoirs hoped that amidst the rapid changes of the times, there would be a lasting appreciation for the hard work and ingenuity integral to everyday life. It was not just the artifacts they collected, but also the stories of the people behind them and their use. One unique artifact that Mr. Lenoir found along his travels was a barrel organ. Stop in the museum to not only discover a comprehensive look at East Tennessee’s evolution but also a pictorial progression of the construction of Norris Dam.
Norris Dam: Majestic Engineering Marvel
Conclude your Norris Freeway journey with a visit to the iconic Norris Dam, the Tennessee Valley Authority’s first dam construction project. Marvel at the engineering prowess that tamed the Clinch River, providing power and flood control to the region. Enjoy the panoramic views from the dam, explore the surrounding trails, and appreciate the significance of this East Tennessee landmark.
